Before you buy a collagen facial cream, let me give you a little advice. If you believe the advertising hype, collagen creams will reduce wrinkles, increase firmness and make you look younger. But, how or why would they work?

There are five layers of epidermis and two layers of dermis that make up the skin. Constant cellular activity goes on in these layers. Below those seven layers is subcutaneous tissue containing fat, which often becomes thinner with age. But, it is the health of the epidermis that we are primarily concerned with, when it comes to our appearance and the question is, does a collagen facial cream support it.

95% of the cells in the epidermis are composed of keratin proteins. The other five percent serve various functions, including fighting infection. None of the cells of the epidermis are composed of collagens. Those proteins are only found in the dermis of the skin.

Collagen creams are basically gelatin. You may recall a time when eating gelatin was recommended to strengthen the fingernails or improve the appearance of the skin. Dietary supplements containing collagens derived from chicken bones and other sources are promoted for the same purpose, as well as improving the function of the joints.

If you had a protein deficiency, then they might help. But, generally speaking, taking those supplements has never been shown to provide any health benefit. Applying collagen creams is much the same thing.

When you read the labels for collagen creams, you will see that the protein is listed far down on the list. In one of the popular brands, it is the 24th ingredient, far behind all of the artificial preservatives and petrochemicals.

A good alternative to a collagen facial cream is one that contains Functional Keratin, which has been shown to stimulate the production of new cells, replenishing those that have been lost to time. Collagen creams do not contain the nutrients necessary to stimulate the production of cells, or anything else.

They cannot make the fibers lie in the dermis stronger. They can only make your face look shiny. Researchers learned that, in the body, BPA acts like the hormone estrogen and disrupts the function and production of the body's own hormones. The compound also disrupts the function of the endocrine system, including the thyroid and other glands. It also causes changes in breast and prostate tissue that predispose the cells to cancer.

Manufacturers have found acceptable safer replacements for BPA and some of them are using them, as a health precaution. So, when you are shopping for drinking water containers, the best choices are glass, but when an unbreakable choice is needed, look for BPA-free.

I've done a lot of things to improve the taste of my coffee. I bought a coffee grinder and started grinding coffee beans myself to get the freshest taste. I bought airtight storage containers to keep those beans fresh. But the single way I improved my coffee was installing a water filter. Yes, it's the attachment to my faucet that made my coffee go from good, to excellent.

The problem was that I have horrible water, it's hard and leaves dingy calcium stains on my glasses and silverware. I wouldn't drink water from the tap, but that didn't stop me from using it to make my coffee in the morning. The problem is that coffee can absorb any and all flavors or odors that it comes in contact with, including minerals in your water and even the chlorine that many cities use to purify your water.

It wasn't too long ago, that I purchased my water filter. I debated between a filter and buying bottle water, but I decided to go with the water filter because it's more environmentally friendly than using bottles that are thrown into the trash or need to be recycled.

To filter my water, I bought a Culligan Water Filter (FM-15A), you can find it on Amazon and similar stores for .95. It looked simple and price was right.

The very next pot of coffee, I could taste an improvement. The taste of the coffee was fresher and more smooth. Overall, my water tasted better, looked cleaner and got rid of the hard water odor.

According to the packaging, it reduces chlorine taste and odor, custs back on sediments, lead, cysts and a whole bunch of other nasty sounding things.

The filter was simple to install, even for a non-handyman like me. I had it setup and running in just a few minutes.

The only drawback is that the water filter reduced the pressure. At first it was annoying, but now I've learned to do other parts of the coffee prep while the coffee pot is filling up with water. I have enough time to put in the filter and get my coffee ready to grind. It's worth the wait for better tasting coffee.

I debated getting a Brita pitcher, but I'm very satisfied with my decision. I've had Britas in the past and the water tastes better via the filter.
